Last night I contributed photography coverage to the Autism Asperger ACT ‘Singapore Sling’ Gala Dinner, raising much needed funds. It was held at the Hotel Realm, supported by lots of businesses that contributed goods or services to the silent and live auctions and raffles. It was a fabulous night, the Singapore Sling theme added another element of fun and entertainment. The 270 guests were generous and the auctions were a huge success! The feature piece of the live auction was Julia Gillard’s maiden speech signed and framed. Tim Gavel and Genevieve Jacobs from the ABC kept the evening running smoothly, and Steve Thomas of Edge Real Estate was the man with the hammer. Annie and the Armadillos, Prosperous Mountain Lion Dance and Canberra Mandolin Orchestra provided great music.
What is Autism?
According to the Autism Spectrum Disorder website…
Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are lifelong developmental disabilities characterised by marked difficulties in social interaction, impaired communication, restricted and repetitive interests and behaviours and sensory sensitivities. The word ‘spectrum’ is used because the range and severity of the difficulties people with an ASD experience can vary widely. ASDs include autistic disorder, Asperger’s disorder and pervasive developmental disorder – not otherwise stated, which is also known as atypical autism.
Is there a cure?
It’s a lifelong disability that can be managed and at this stage there is no cure. The best case scenario is for early diagnosis, treatment, managment and specialised education. Families need help and an awesome event like this raises general awareness as well as bring in much needed financial support.
It would be remiss of me not to give a special mention to a few key supporters and sponsors. Here’s the lineup…
Bendigo Bank (corporate partner)
SNAP Printing Canberra City
Beth Jennings Photography
Elrington Boardman Allport Lawyers sponsoring Annie and the Armadillos
Prosperous Mountain Lion Dance
Edge Real Estate
Instyle Indoor Plant Hire
The Canberra Mondolin Orchestra
