Lesley was after a cover with Ben and Bryce on it.
We took a look at their online sites and current profile. Instantly I knew the exact location to use, a photography studio that is converted from a warehouse, so it has that classic washed white walls look – somewhat urban/domestic but not literally in someone’s living room.
From a previous shoot I remembered they had yellow chairs which our ‘subjects’ could sit in, which would fit perfectly with their armchair theme and also give them a domestic/casual feel, provided we achieved the right feel in posing terms.
I could also see the composition lined up parallel to the wall, and a low-ish camera angle which ‘hero-ises’ the subject, because as the viewer we have the sensation of ‘looking up’ to them.
It all landed very easily really, in terms of the Creative Behaviours textured brick walls, yellow chairs and natural lighting.
Ben and Bryce were total pros in that they gave all their energy to embody the relaxed, homely, approachable feel. We just had to do several subtle moves with feet, ankles, shoulders, hands, for correct balance and placement as well as mood and expression to get the right feel for engagment and their natural personality.
They were pleased!
“Working with Beth was a real pleasure as she made us feel comfortable from the first minute we met…
Having worked with many photographers previously, her sense of clarity in what she wanted was both infectious and engaging and left me feeling straight way that we were working with the right person for the job as it was a book cover and the legacy of this shot would last for quite some time…
On the day of the shoot it was very relaxed and collaborative which was both fun and rewarding particularly once we saw the final shots…
I’m really proud of the content of the book but now I can be equally proud of our first impression with this cover. Importantly I think Beth has created the sense of curiosity in someone seeing the book and wanting to pick it up…
My expectations were that we would be treated like the “client” and not just the “subject” and this was exactly the case…
I would happily recommend Beth to anyone looking for authenticity in both person and in production, professionalism in process whilst keeping it very, very real…
Beth is very important part of our book team!”
