On the morning of the 5th of February this year Dave was diagnosed with bowel cancer, later that same day his wife Michelle gave birth to their beautiful daughter Caitlin. David’s prognosis worsened in August when it was discovered that the cancer had spread. Michelle has been unable to return to work and has unquestionably exhausted savings with medical expenses, trips and accommodation for extended periods in Sydney, when a glimmer of hope was presented. The painful decision was made to withdraw treatment as his condition deteriorated.
During David’s illness he expressed that he has never been able to hold his daughter without being fearful of not seeing her grow up. His other great sadness and concern was for his wife Michelle. Over the last 9 months Michelle and David had displayed incredible strength, courage and commitment in an attempt to fight this battle. Unfortunately in the early evening of October 19 Dave lost his struggle and passed away.
to take your health for granted. On Saturday night I donated my services to cover the Somlyay Family Fundraiser. This event was put together very quickly, to raise funds for the Somlyay family – Michelle and baby Caitlin. It was also a night for family and friends to come together to support David’s mother Nancy, his sister Lisa and his best mate from childhood BJ, and their families. Lisa read a beautiful and moving speech, how brave she was to get up in front of all those people, to thank everyone for coming and speak about David, with Wayne by her side for support.
was unbelievable. Bowel Cancer Australia supported the event. The Hotel Realm donated the facility, Canberra’s Elvis Garry Buckley entertained, QANTAS, Richard Luton Properties and Flight Centre pitched in with very generous support. There were signed sports jerseys by footballers and sports people, a bed package, dental implants, a golf membership from Murrumbidgee Golf Course…even Julia Gillard made an appearance via her signature on a premium bottle of wine. It goes on…the vibe was so, so lovely…I think everybody there felt really good to be able to help by either contributing or bidding in the live and silent auctions and attending at $50 a head. It’s amazing what people will do to help a family they don’t even know personally.
If you’d like to view the full collection and/or purchase prints, then please click here. 20% of profits will go to the Somlyay family. The gallery is live for 14 days.
